Some books have layers you don’t see coming — you start with something that seems straightforward, and by the middle you’re in entirely different territory that somehow makes everything before it taste better. Who Is Anna Stenberg? is that kind of book.
Start with a girl fleeing her murderous father. Add a mysterious pickpocket named Anna with her own secrets. Fold in a disguise — she becomes Viktor, a boy, and finds freedom in the transformation. Then stir in some Victorian supernatural elements in the second half. By the end you’ve got something rich and complex that you didn’t expect from the first chapter.
Norman knows how to build. This one surprised me pleasantly.
